Blame George Lucas

It used to be that a trilogy was enough.
So here I am watching “Spider Man III” and I’m thinking yeah, totally there could be a fourth.
It’s not about the “three parter” anymore.
And it’s George Lucas’ bloody fault.
It used to be that a trilogy would wrap up epic story lines and you knew, just KNEW, that they were going off into the sunset happy, safe and would be so for an eternity.
Isn’t that the joy of fiction? That when it ends (if it ends happily, that is) they’re living joyous lives that outlive even their creator.
BUT NO!
Then there are the books which continue to throw our hero’s, Luke, Leia, Han and the rest of the merry Star Wars band, in continued chaos.
Of course why read about people who aren’t in conflict?
So now I’m not just happy with the trilogy. I want the story to continue, visually if possible.
And, frankly, I demand that the same actor’s reprise their roles. So if Toby Maguire doesn’t play Spiderman in the fourth installment, or Kirsten Dunst, then it’s just not part of the same series.
Even in animation. “The Simpsons Movie” wouldn’t have been acceptable if any one of the actor’s didn’t reprise their roles. Maybe that’s why they can fight for larger contracts in the 20th season? Because they know we’d know that it’s not the same.
How on earth could they have done “Indiana 4″ without Harrison Ford? They couldn’t have. Now maybe in 20 years if they decide to do a remake then yeah, start from scratch.
ALERT!!! A.D.D. MOMENT!!!
(Check out this Harrison Ford Public Service Announcement!)
I won’t have an expectation that it should be what it was but something new. And I don’t mind the new.
There was a conversation a while ago where someone was telling my sister about “Mary Poppins: The Musical” in which they changed the Disney-ized version in which our hero Nanny isn’t quite the sweet Julie Andrews.
My sister was upset. She wanted it to be the same. I don’t mind the reinvention.
Battlestar Galactica,1Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, Charlie’s Angels2 - People might say that it’s because Hollywood has run out of original ideas but, like a remix, I like variations on a theme.
But it has to be the same. But different. But the same.
So, thanks George. Thanks a lot!
Because of you, good or bad, I can’t get enough.
